Proper Ingredients for Fire Safety

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) research, cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Two of every five home fires begin in the kitchen-more than any other place in the home. Cooking fires are also the leading cause of home fire-related injuries. Most of these fires start because people aren't paying attention. While a few minutes may not seem like much time to be away from what's cooking, that is all it takes to start a fire.

Leaving cooking unattended and other unsafe kitchen practices are a recipe for disaster. Review the cooking safety tips provided below to learn how to help prevent kitchen fires before they start.

- Stay in the kitchen when you are frying, grilling, or broiling food.

- When you are simmering, baking, or roasting food, check it regularly, stay in the home, and use a timer to remind you.

- Keep cooking areas clean and clear of combustibles such as towels, drapes, and pot holders.

- Keep children away from cooking areas by enforcing a "kid free zone" of three feet around the stove.

- If an oven fire starts, turn off the heat and keep the door closed. If the fire does not go out, get out of the home and call the fire department.

- If you have a fire in your microwave, turn it off and keep the door closed. Don't open the door until the fire is completely out. If in doubt, get out of the home and call the fire department.

- Always keep an oven mitt and a lid nearby. If a small grease fire starts in a pan, smother the flames by carefully sliding the lid over the pan (wearing the oven mitt). Do not move the pan. To keep the fire from restarting, do not remove the lid until it is completely cool. NEVER pour water on a grease fire.

There is no substitute for training and experience. Here at SERVPRO of Coon Rapids Central Anoka County, we are built on a foundation of fire damage restoration expertise. If your property suffers from fire damage, smoke damage, or anything in between, give us a call at 763-712-9712! We're here to service Coon Rapids, Andover, Ham Lake, Anoka County, and the whole greater Twin Cities.

Fire Safety Tips for Warmer Months

3/20/2022 (Permalink)

Warm weather is on the horizon! It's time to switch from sweaters to shorts, deep fryers to grills, and indoor parties to backyard barbecues. Just because we're less inclined to switch on the heat does not mean that we shouldn't be vigilant when it comes to protecting ourselves and our property from fire hazards. See below for high-risk areas for fire damage and how to maintain them.

Spring Fire Safety Tips

Fire cannot be avoided when you're preparing a perfectly cooked steak or patty on the grill. From the get-go, you've got inherent risks. Before starting a grill, be sure to check all potential problematic points including the propane tank, the hose, and all connecting points. You can do this while your meat is marinating or while you're trimming your chicken!

We understand that every house has a pyro-happy Boy/Girl Scout around. When starting a charcoal grill, charcoal should only be soaked with charcoal starter fluid. Avoid using lighter fluid as that can create a burst of heat and flames can get out of control quickly!

Every Dad loves a shiny, clean grill. Nearly 20% of all grill structure fires occur due to failing to clean the grill before and after use. Give your grill a nice scrape down while it's hot so it's ready to go for next time!

There's nothing worse than dropping your smore into a fire, right? Wrong! There's nothing worse than falling into a fire yourself! Never leave young children unattended near a fire pit.

Safety first, safety first, safety first! Fill a bucket with water and set it next to your put before your even build a fire. Avoid throwing leaves, pine cones, pine needs, and paper into a fire pit as they catch fire quickly and can result in dangerous floating embers.

When things go awry, we're your guy!

In any emergency situation, always call 9-1-1 before calling SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County. Once a fire has been properly handled by the fire department, give us a call 763-712-9712! We're always "Here to Help!"

Maintaining Your Smoke Alarm

2/4/2022 (Permalink)

smoke damage in a home To avoid a total fire damage disaster, properly maintain your smoke alarms so that you're notified of any suspicious situations immediately!

Experiencing a fire on your property can be one of the most stressful situations you can have as a property owner. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. Not only can fire damage restoration be expensive, but the process can take much longer than drying out a flooded room.

Smoke and Fire Alarms

In more than half of the homes that reported fires to U.S fire departments, the fire alarm sounded to alert the residents of the property. The death rate per 1,000 reported home fires was more than twice as high in homes that did not have working smoke alarms (NFPA).

Here's what you need to know!

Smoke alarms should be interconnected. when one sounds in the basement, all other alarms around the house should alert you of potential smoke damage.

Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. As you're sweeping the floors, vacuuming, or moving around the house doing chores, take a second to press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.

Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years. With the advancement of time, smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, in addition to mitigating false alarms.

What do you do when you experience fire damage?

Call us, of course! We are one of the top fire damage restoration companies near you. We are available 24/7 and have crews ready round the clock to respond to any emergency that you might have. We've got the committed people and the  most advanced tools to make restoring your home as painless as possible.

Fire Evacuation Plan: Incorporating Pets

11/22/2021 (Permalink)

fire damage ceiling in fire damage home Pictured is a ceiling damaged by a raging fire. All 3 levels were affected after a fire broke out while a family was cooking.

Although not everyone may entirely agree... pets are family too! It is crucial for families to create a fire evacuation plan that they can quickly put into action in the event that there is an emergency. When you ensure that all members of your family understand what to do if a fire breaks out in your home, it decreases the need to take unnecessary risks and is a helpful tool to use in case of panic. Even if you do have to consider fire damage restoration in the aftermath, you will find excellent consolation knowing that you have created a plan to follow. In case of a fire emergency, the tips below will help you include every family member - even the ones with paws, wings, or scales!

Planning with Pets

Prepare an Emergency Food Kit

When a fire sparks in your home, you won't have time to think about how many cans of wet food to grab or be able to count out a sufficient amount of daily cups for your pet. By compiling these items beforehand, you will be able to grab and go, saving you precious time in a dangerous situation. Don't forget to pack water, bowls, doggy bags, potential litter. A spare collar with your animal's information wouldn't be a bad idea either!

Create a Form of Shelter

By putting your pet's emergency kit into a crate or some form of travel shelter, you won't have to think about grabbing multiple bags and forgetting the necessities. Even something as simple as a blanket will help keep your pet comfortable in a stressful situation like a fire.

Medication

Fire damage can sometimes make it impossible to return to your property until it is safe, which may take longer than you think. If you are unable to return to your home, you won't be able to access your pet's vital medication. A simple plastic bag will do the trick - just toss it in with your food and other essential materials.

Many people become extremely overwhelmed during and after a fire damage event. We know that coping with the aftermath can be confusing, scary, and just plain difficult. That's why we're always here to help whether you are in downtown St. Paul, Coon Rapids, Anoka County or anywhere in the greater Twin Cities area. Our team can assist you in every step of the way.

Aimee and Tierney were asked questions ranging from simple processes to detailed methods of fire damage restoration. Some examples include:

  • How long does fire damage restoration take?
  • Is fire damage cleanup a dangerous process?
  • How many people does it take to clean up after fire damage?

Fire Damage DOES Happen in Winter - Let Us Help!

11/17/2021 (Permalink)

Believe it or not, fire damage occurs more often during the winter months. Many homeowners will light their chimneys, cook out, and crank up the thermostat when the temperature drops. In the event of fire damage, timely mitigation is the best way to reduce your fire damage costs. We know that restoration is virtually a requirement after fire damage occurs, but how about measures to prevent fire damage? Look no further!

Main Fire Hazards

Holiday Lights - for those of us who put up holiday lights right after Halloween (Thanksgiving, who?), your home's holiday lights might become hazardous. While hanging up your lights, be sure to double-check any wires or bulbs that might become hazardous.

Electronics - technology is always advancing and you might receive a fancy new piece of electronics for the holidays. Untested electronics are a major fire hazard and every single year people light up their living rooms with more than their Christmas tree.

The Holiday Tree - Speaking of trees.... many people begin their holiday season with a bushy, green, pine-smelling bunch of branches. However, as time goes on, these supple branches die and can become a nasty problem (and we're not talking about the cleanup). Be sure your tree is properly watered, at least a couple feet away from an outlet, and for Pete's sake don't put any candles nearby!

Holiday's never stop our fire restoration services!

Here at SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County, even if it is the holiday season, we are still faster to any sized disaster! The fire department will have to put our your fire, but we will zip in immediately after it is safe to handle deeper restorations. As your local water damage and fire damage company, we can handle it all! From start to finish (yes that means reconstruction services, too!), we're here to help. Call 763-712-9712 today with any questions about our services.

A Quick Lesson About Fire Damage

11/16/2021 (Permalink)

the fire triangle: oxygen, heat, fuel The fire triangle illustrates the three elements a fire needs to ignite: heat, fuel, and an oxidizing agent.

A Little Lesson About Fire

When the leaves begin to fall and snowflakes begin to flurry around, people begin to dread the cold weather. "Time to crank up the heat!" As much as we adore our HVAC heating systems and indoor fireplaces, it is important to be cognizant of the hazards of fires.

Each year, from 2017 to 2019, there was an estimated average of 106,700 multifamily residential building fires. These fires results in 400 deaths, 3,875 injuries, and over $1.7 billion dollars in property losses. Wow!

It is important to be aware of the obvious concerns like avoiding crowding your furnace or keeping things by an open flame, but it is important to consider other threats. Cooking (around 74%) was the leading cause of multifamily residential building homes. In addition to cooking, cooking areas and kitchens were the primary areas of origin for non-confined multifamily residential building fires. Holiday lights are also on the list! Be aware of how many cords you're plugging into an extension cord.

24/7 Fire Restoration Services

Our certified technicians are on the clock 24 hours a day, seven days a week year round. Even though multifamily residential building fires occur most commonly from 4pm-9pm, you could be in the 3% that occur at 1am. In that case, we are the ones to call! Once the firefighters take care of business, we will follow with the water damage and fire damage mitigation steps.

If your property has been affected by fire damage, call SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County today at 763-712-9712. We're here to service Coon Rapids, Anoka County, and the greater Twin Cities area in general. We're always "Here to Help!"

Prepare Your Furnace for Winter!

11/12/2021 (Permalink)

We're back in full swing for school, the leaves are dropping like flies, and your Starbucks Pumpkin flavored beverage is only doing so much to stave off the morning chill. It's that dreaded time of year again: turning your HVAC system from "Cool" to "Heat." Take a quick moment to check the following list to be sure that your furnace is good to go for the upcoming winter and dropping temperatures.

Tips to Prepare Your Furnace for Winter

  1. Change your air filters. More than likely, you have air filters behind a vent grill in a wall or ceiling, or potentially a single filter in the HVAC system itself. By cleaning or replacing your filter, you will keep nasty particles out of you HVAC system and the air that you breathe in general will be cleaner.
  2. Clean the heat exchanger. By hiring a trained professional, your heat exchanger should be brushed and vacuumed out annually. Why? The technician will check for cracks or damages that could lead to a dangerous carbon monoxide leak.
  3. Inspect your carbon monoxide detectors. Just like your fire detectors, you should be routinely inspecting and replacing your carbon monoxide detectors. These alarms will help protect you from the "silent killer."
  4. Remove any items you have stored near your furnace. Especially the flammable ones! It is extremely dangerous to congest your furnace with items, particularly anything that is likely to catch fire. Remove any items that are sitting on top or in front of your air vents, too.
  5. Inspect the exhaust flue that is outside. Surprisingly enough, you might have a smart animal that has built a nest in your flue or a tree that has grown just a little too much and is now blocking the way. Clear any obstruction to ensure that your HVAC system can work properly.

If you have any issues with these tips, don't be afraid to contact your local HVAC professional. It'll always be better to prepare than to deal with fire damage later. If fire damage occurs in your home, don't hesitate to call us! We're here to help all day every day!

Limiting the Chances of a Furnace Fire

10/25/2021 (Permalink)

furnace in a home Reduce the chances of a furnace fire!

The National Fire Protection Association claims that more than one in six home fires originate from heating equipment, which is the second most common cause of a fire behind cooking. Even though a large majority of these pieces of heating equipment are space heaters or fire places, one out of every ten starts with a central heating system.

Follow the tips below to minimize your chances for a furnace fire!

  • Have your furnace serviced - Prior to the cold season, hire a professional to inspect your equipment to ensure your furnace is working properly.
  • Replace the air filter - You should replace your filter every month or so, depending on the manufacturer's specifications. Furnace filters help prevent air contamination in your home.
  • Check and clean air vents and ducts - it's as simple as getting out your vacuum and removing the dust in your vents and ducts. We know this job can suckso you can always hire a professional!
  • Inspect the exhaust vent - Ensure that your exhaust vent is clear from any obstruction such as a rodent's nest, leaves, or snow.
  • Remove items from around the furnace - if there are flammable items near a flame, need we say more? Clear the area of all flammable objects.

When winterizing your home or preparing for cold season, your furnace should be on the list! All of these maintenance tasks can be complete in just a few hours. If you're not comfortable with any of these processes, call a professional! For professional fire, water, and mold remediation services, give us a jingle at 763-712-4837!

Content Cleaning: What is it and how do we do it?

before and after of a fire damage toy Here is an example of a kid's toy that was damaged by a fire and then cleaned by our certified technicians.

As one of the top SERVPRO franchises in Minnesota, SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County is there to help you when everything has been turned upside down by fire damage. When your property has been ravaged by flames, many important belongings and documents can be severely damaged by flames, soot, and smoke odors. With our expansive cleaning capabilities, we are able to salvage many of your items and restore them to make it look "Like it never even happened." By doing this, we can save you money by restoring your contents instead of having to replace them.

Packing Out the Contents

The first thing to do after you experience fire damage is to assess the entire property for damage. By assessing the damage, we will be able to figure out what our next steps are regarding cleaning your personal belongings. Our certified technicians will determine whether or not the items are salvageable, they will take photos of all of the contents, they will take inventory of items that are restorable, and then we will safely and carefully pack up all of the items to be moved. Once boxed up, the items will be labeled by name and stored in our 18,000 square foot warehouse in climate-controlled vault storage.

The Cleaning

Once the contents have been safely moved to our warehouse, they are brought into our cleaning room where our certified technicians will dictate the best method of cleaning. They will determine the best path of cleaning based on several factors:

  • Are they hard or soft contents?
  • Do they need to be hand washed or machine washed?
  • What sort of chemical can be used that won't damage the material?

Hard contents, such as dishes, vases, and other sturdy objects will be cleaned in machines like  ultrasonic equipment and deodorizers for smoke odor. For objects that cannot handle the harshness of an automated machine, we will hand-clean the item with environmentally-friendly degreaser or odor counteractants.

Moving Back Home

After our technicians mitigate the fire damage and our reconstruction division repairs your property back to normal, our team will pack up your contents and send them to your home. With your fire damaged contents repair back to normal, you can enjoy living life the way it was prior to your properties' fire.

If you find yourself in need of water or fire damage mitigation, content cleaning, or reconstruction services, give us a ring today at 763-712-9712. We service Coon Rapids, Central Anoka County, and the greater Twin Cities Area (Minneapolis and St. Paul).

Fire Damage Restoration Process

7/22/2021 (Permalink)

The fire damage restoration process includes the removal of soot residues from various surfaces and materials. Depending on the severity of the fire, the soot that remains can be drastically different from one fire to the next.

Fires that give off smoke produce smoke-filled residues and soot. When smoke is released into the air when various materials are decomposing, the soot is in the form of suspended particles, gases, and aerosols.

The fire damage restoration process is dependent on what types of residue is on the material. Different cleaning and restoration methods will be used for each residue.

  1. Cleaning Dry Smoke Residue
  2. Cleaning Wet Smoke Residue
  3. Protein Residue
  4. Fuel Oil Soot Residue

During a fire, soot and smoke particles love to settle on and adhere to any surface they can get their hands on. Our fire damage restoration process is top-notch and means we have the capability to remove and clean these residues. Put confidence in your local professionals that provide you with the best fire restoration services available!

Handling Your Fire Damage Faster Than Ever!

5/3/2021 (Permalink)

flames We will clean belongings, furniture, keepsakes, clothes and anything else in your house that makes it your home.

How does SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County determine what to do with smoke damaged items?

Fire damage is an intriguing issue because temperature, whether the fire is smoldering or blazing, affects necessary cleanup measures differently.  Similarly to water damage, smoke odor and particles can easily penetrate any crack and crevice on your property. If these particles are not handled in a proper manner, the smoke odor has the potential to stick around for months after a fire. Proper cleaning, immediate odor neutralizing efforts, proper ventilation, and consistent debris removal efforts are critical to saving as many of your belongings as possible. Timing is the most crucial component of successful smoke remediation.

Are you running out of time?

The IICRC, a global leader in all types of remediation, identifies these time windows:

  1. Within minutes: Porous materials and synthetics must be immediately addressed to prevent permanent discoloration.
  2. Within hours to days: wooden furniture, flooring, painted walls, and clothing can become permanently stained. Metal surfaces will begin to rust, pit, and corrode which often requires refinishing or replacement.
  3. Within weeks: Prolonged soot exposure will embed itself in the fibers and surfaces resulting in a longer, more pricey restoration with a higher likelihood of replacement.

With our restore versus replace mentality, SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County does everything within our capabilities to bring your items back to preloss conditions.

Give us a call today at 763-712-9712 so we can help make your home disaster seem "Like it never even happened."

Walking You Through the Fire Damage Remediation Process

4/19/2021 (Permalink)

assessing fire damage in Anoka County Over the past five years we have built a reputation as specialists in fire, smoke, soot and restoration of fire damaged homes.

When a devastating fire occurs in your home, it is hard to think ahead to the recovery process. You may not even know where to begin moving forward. Once the superficial signs of a fire are cleared away, you may still smell the smoke over the long term. Every fire is inherently different, but skilled professionals at SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County can help you get to the bottom of the issue through a standard fire procedure.

The Beginning

Once emergency services (if required) take care of the worst of the fire damage, SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County can come in and begin cleaning. After the smoke clears and the dust settles, our fire damage remediation specialists will move in. Depending on the type of damage presented from the fire, the technician will follow a standard procedure.

Our technicians will carefully inspect the surrounding area and test the damaged sections to determine the extend of the damage. Our technicians always have a restore before replace mentality, ensuring that they will avoid anything that might exacerbate the damage. While they're inspecting and testing, they will walk you through the process in order to develop a plan.

Rising Action: Following a Plan

Depending on the severity of the fire damage, our technician will ensure the security of your property. If necessary, they will board up missing walls and windows, and set tarps around the roof of your home to maintain privacy.

Water removal is also an important next time. Many people don't realize that water damage appears almost at the same time as smoke damage. To rid the situation of water, our experts will set up dehumidifiers.

After water has been removed, it'll be time to get to the brunt of the work. To avoid agitating troublesome particles within the damage area, the technician will remove smoke and soot damage with extreme care. A Decatur fire damage cleaning will take restorable items into account and odors will be fought with using fogging equipment and air scrubbers.

The Final Step

Once all of the major fire damage issues have been taken care of, in addition to the water damage and smoke and soot on your home's surface, we can begin the remaining minor repairs. Since we are a licensed contractor with the State of Minnesota, we can handle any building services that may be needed from replacing drywall and painting over a refurbished surface.

Whether you need smoke damage remediated or entire sections of your home repaired after a destructive fire, we're ready to help 24/7. We will make it "Like it never happened." When you experience a fire in your home, call 763-712-9712.

Importance of Smoke Alarms

3/15/2021 (Permalink)

hand reaching for a smoke alarm A fast response lessens the damage, limits further damage, and reduces cost.

Smoke alarms can only save lives if they are properly maintained and in good working condition. They are an important part of safety in a home because a smoke detector will automatically identify and warn you of the presence of smoke.

Perform Proper Maintenance!

How do smoke detectors work?

There are two common types of smoke detectors: photoelectric and ionization. The photoelectric sensors use a beam of light to recognize smoke. The beam will be shot in a straight line when there is no smoke and will scatter when smoke hits, signaling the alarm. The second type of smoke detector uses ions; when smoke enters the chamber the electric currents drop and the alarm will sound.

Maintenance Tips

Test your smoke alarm. You should check your detectors once every month to verify if the battery is still working or not.

Vacuum your smoke alarm. Use a soft brush attachment around the vents of your smoke alarm once every 6 months to rid dust buildup and cobwebs.

Replace the battery. If you notice that your smoke detector is making a beeping noise, it may be time to switch the battery. However, not all smoke detectors have a battery so be sure to check the manufacturer's instructions before replacing the batteries.

Smoke detectors not only save lives, but could save you lots of money. If a fire occurs in your home, a properly working smoke detector will alert you of a potential emergency. The sooner you're able to respond to a disaster, the better.

Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County Smoke and Soot Cleanup

2/1/2021 (Permalink)

fire in a home Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County Home

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

The right Coon Rapids fire restoration service can restore your building and help you get your life back. Let's look at how this happens.

Protecting Your Home From Further Damage

The first step in restoring your home is to assess the damage. First, the fire damage restoration specialist will board up and tarp up the home as required to protect it from further environmental damage.

Drying and Water Damage

The next step is to dry out the home to mitigate water damage from fighting the fire. Often, the water used to fight the fire can be as damaging as the fire itself. We'll use powerful air movers and vacuum pumps to get all of the water out and get the area completely dry.

Cleaning the Inside

After everything is dried out, the specialists will enter and clean all of the smoke damage, dirt, soot and debris out. This will help to sanitize the area and get it ready for full restoration.

Final Restoration Services

Finally, the entire room will be restored to its pre-fire condition. In some cases, this might mean just laying new carpet, repairing some holes and repainting. In others, it could mean complete reconstruction of one or more rooms. In the end, the object is to restore your home so it's like the fire never happened.

What to Avoid When Dealing With Fire Damage in Andover

Restoring a Chimney After Fire Damage in an Andover Home

Minnesota homeowners are well aware of many risks related to fire damage. Still, one facet that is often overlooked is the cleanliness of the chimney. Every year in the US, there are over 25,000 chimney fires that cause an average of $125 million in damages. Fortunately, a little bit of fireplace care and maintenance can go a long way toward saving your home from disaster.

If a chimney or fireplace-related incident causes fire damage in your Andover home, SERVPRO technicians can come to you within hours of your call to address the issue. These IICRC-certified professionals can mitigate several different facets of fire-related damages, including odors, residues, burnt structures, and much more. The goal is to safely restore your possessions and return your home to a preloss condition.

Fireplace Safety Tips for Homeowners

Minimize buildup

The leading cause of chimney fires is a buildup of soot and creosote. This accumulation can be prevented by using manufactured logs or seasoned hardwood. These items burn more cleanly than regular logs, which save you from fire risks. If you have a metal chimney, burn manufactured logs one at a time to prevent chimney warping.

Burn simple materials

Before you start your fire, open the damper and keep it open until the fire is extinguished. Only burn wood or manufactured logs, and avoid burning items that can create toxic fumes like packing foam, junk mail, and glossy wrapping paper. Avoid burning resinous woods like pine, which can leave creosote residue in your chimney.

Keep burns slow

A slow and steady burn is safer for your home than a roaring fire. A fire that is too hot can crack your chimney, so burn a couple of logs at a time near the back of the fireplace.

SERVPRO Restores Your Living Space

SERVPRO technicians can evaluate the extent of the disaster and get straight to cleaning. The key with fire damage is to remove residues that can corrode surfaces or otherwise compromise their safety. If you have a fire get out of control and char your carpet, SERVPRO can deep-clean the area with industrial-grade vacuums and EPA-registered disinfectants, as well as directly spray the affected area with deodorizing solvents. If the carpet cannot be salvaged, SERVPRO can work with you to ensure that it can be replaced per your insurance policy.

Fires lead to Soot Damage that SERVPRO can Help Remediate

A strong repulsive smell is one of the first signs of a burning house. Most times, diminishing smoke is a sign of a fire ending. However, after a fire, you have to deal with soot and smoke damage and water damage from the firefighters putting out the flames.

After a fire damages your Andover home, you have to make decisions during the emotionally charged and confusing time. However, the sooner you make the right decision, the faster you can restore your home and return to normalcy. One critical decision you need to make is to hire a competent fire restoration company like SERVPRO to help you with the cleanup and restoration efforts. Smoke and soot can wreak havoc to your home and possessions in the following ways:

Staining

It does not take long after putting out a fire to see the effects of smoke. Stains appear on the walls, curtains, windows, clothes, and furniture.

Corroding Metal

Soot is acidic, and it does not spare metal-made items like pipes, sinks, and appliances. Corrosion can cause your appliances and kitchen fittings to wear out faster than they should.

Lingering Odor

When smoke particles settle on your carpets and furniture, it could take weeks before the odor dissipates.

At SERVPRO, we provide comprehensive restoration services after fire damage. We can provide structural cleaning to remove residues from your walls and floors. If the fire ruined some parts of your home severely, it might be impossible to return them to preloss state. Our technicians can dispose of the structural items that the flames have charred or the heat has blistered.

We can also restore salvageable fire-damaged contents because it is cheaper to do so than it is to replace or refinish them. We use several methods to clean different possessions in a fire loss. We can use dusting cloths or feather dusters to eliminate surface dust by wiping or brushing the surface of the ruined items lightly. Vacuuming and dry cleaning sponges can remove particular soiling and light debris.

When dealing with a fire loss, call SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County at (763) 712-9712. We have the expertise and tools needed to restore fire-damaged homes to make the destruction look “Like it never even happened.”

Tips for Eliminating Odors After Fire Damage in an Anoka Home

The flames of a fire can cause irreversible harm to the structural materials and personal items in your property. However, the destructive power of fires extends beyond the flames themselves. After extinguishing a fire, the potential for damage is still present because lingering by-products of the fire can harm your property and possessions. The particles of smoke attach themselves to surfaces and become embedded in porous materials such as carpeting, clothing, and paint.

Odors also accompany the smoke and they can linger in your property for many days, weeks or months, compromising indoor air quality and the health of the occupants. If your Anoka residence has fire damage, it is also critical to take immediate action to remove the smoke and its odor. Some things you can do to remove smoke odors from your house include:

  • Airing out your home
  • Using positive pressure ventilation by placing fans in your home
  • Cleaning porous items in your property like upholstery, fabrics, and carpeting thoroughly
  • Opening all doors and windows
  • Repainting your home

Odors may still linger after taking the steps above because smoke particles require specialized cleaning methods. You can enlist professional odor removal services from SERVPRO. Our Odor Control Technicians (OCTs) have the equipment and expertise to clean up the affected structures and contents and eliminate smoke odors. Soot from a fire can contain chemicals and acids that can destroy fabrics further. We can use heavy duty vacuums to remove soot from floors and walls to prevent it from staining or damaging the structures further.

To deal with smoke odors, we can spray deodorizing agents directly onto visible smoke residues. These agents form a barrier that stops or minimizes the evaporation process, preventing odors from transforming into a vapor. The vapor is what you smell. If odor particles are already in the air, our technicians can block them using deodorant vapors or counteragents because they comprise a stronger, more pleasing odor that overcomes smoke scents.

Our SERVPRO OCTs can also use thermal foggers to deal with smoke damage. This deodorization process disperses deodorant droplets similar to how smoke spreads using pressurized force. Thermal fogging is ideal for lessening smoke scents in large areas.

When in need of smoke odor removal services in your property, call SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County at (763) 712-9712 for help. We can eradicate the odor to make it “Like it never even happened.”

Fire Damage in Your Coon Rapids Residence Could Call for Removal of Charred Materials and Contents

Statistics show that 60% of fires in Minnesota originate in the kitchen. A fire can start in the kitchen of your Coon Rapids home if a person gets distracted and leaves cooking pans and pots untended. Another common source of fires is flammable liquids like denatured alcohol and gasoline. Seeing fire damage your house and belongings can be devastating.

After such a loss, encouragement comes from having the support and clear guidance in salvaging most possessions, cleaning up your property and removing odors effectively. When there’s fire damage in your Coon Rapids residence, the Fire & Smoke Damage Restoration Technicians (FSRT) at SERVPRO can help you return your property to its normal condition quickly.

A fire can use the contents in your house as fuel and keep burning for many hours. It can ruin clothing, furniture, appliances, and electronics. We can inspect the contents to determine which ones are salvageable and which ones are not. Our technicians can take the salvageable contents to our facilities for thorough cleaning and deodorization before returning them to your home.

Fire can also ruin building materials like drywall, flooring, and tiles, among others. We can remove damaged, burned and contaminated materials that cannot be cleaned economically like wet drywall, upholstered furniture, and carpeting and dispose of them. We can inspect the wooden studs to determine if the charring is severe and if that is the case, we can remove them. Fire may also ruin a ceiling, cooling ductwork and insulation. Our technicians can remove such materials to pave the way for their replacement and restoration of your home. Removing damaged contents and materials also provides a safer environment for our technicians to restore the house.

The other damage that’s hard to deal with after a fire is smoke odors. Many products only mask the smell for brief periods and it can remain in the fabric, upholstery, and walls. Several factors influence the severity of the smoke odor, including the size of the fire, length of exposure, materials that have burned and the size of the affected rooms. Our SERVPRO technicians can neutralize real odors while addressing imaginary odors. We have a robust selection of equipment and products specifically designed to remove stubborn odors such as;

  • Hydroxyl generators
  • Ultra Low Volume (ULV) foggers
  • Thermal foggers
  • Ozone machines

Revolutionize Fire Damage Remediation in Your Minneapolis Home

Kitchen fires happen and can cause serious fire damage. Contact SERVPRO today for remediation assistance.

Fire Damage Experts In Minneapolis Talk About Kitchen Blazes

One of the most common ways something ignites fire inside your Minneapolis home is from kitchen accidents. If the food you are cooking burns, it is possible that extensive fire damage can result. Leaving the kitchen while you are cooking is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. Food can burn, or a grease fire can ignite very quickly, and if you are not in the kitchen when it occurs, then it could get out of hand and cause a large blaze. Once multiple things burn inside your kitchen, it could become necessary to call in a professional fire damage company such as SERVPRO.

If the source of the blaze is the grease that got too hot while cooking, the flames can get large very quickly. Grease burning can cause excessive fire damage to your Minneapolis home in a matter of minutes. If you try to put out the blaze with water, the flames can get bigger, and the inferno can grow quickly. The best way to extinguish the inferno when cooking grease is the fuel is to smother the fire with baking soda or a fire extinguisher. Water clashes with the flames and causes them to grow so something must be done to cut out the burn's oxygen.

Once the fire is completely extinguished, then it is time to call in our SERVPRO experts. We can arrive promptly and quickly begin assessing the situation. We first go through your house and determine whether the area is safe for you and our staff. If we notice any potential hazards, we take steps to mitigate the problem so that no danger exists.

Once the work area is deemed safe, we then inspect your entire structure for smoke and fire-related issues. This includes going through your home and taking swipe tests to see how far smoke damage could have spread. We then bring a test cleaning kit that we can use to determine which chemicals will clean various surfaces the best.

If you ever have something burn inside your kitchen, call SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County at (763) 712-9712 seven days a week.

Cleaning Up Fire Damaged Belongings is a Huge Help for Affected Families in Coon Rapids

Restoring belongings that became covered in soot and sticky residue during a fire in Coon Rapids can become a real messy situation for homeowners who attempt to carry out the work themselves. Many times, people try to do this to save some money, but many of those who try this often find that the number of items covered in grime poses too much of a task.

SERVPRO can help clean up items in Coon Rapids affected by the smoke and soot deposits caused by fire damage. Our in-house cleaning agents remove soiling, including the heaviest grime, from textured items, glossy finishes, and other materials that would seem impossible with just regular degreasing soaps found at local hardware stores.

We cannot safely wash many objects found in your home that now have layers of soot on them with water-based products. Exposure to water could cause additional damage. Some items can withstand slight exposure to water. For these, we use other methods that do not rely on the heavy use of water.

Powders can work wonders for some items that might sustain damage if we used water or other liquids to clean them. These specially formulated powders absorb the grime fire damage leaves behind, allowing us to vacuum the powder and the absorbed soot in one step. Odors become diminished, as well, making it easier to deodorize these belongings later, more completely.

Other items, such as upholstery or cushions, can sustain higher levels of moisture as long as they do not become saturated. Foaming agents can remove soot and other soiling from these surfaces and make them like they looked and smelled before the fire.

When different items in your home hold sentimental value for you or other family members, we ask that you point these out to us. We can provide them with additional cleaning care and concentrate on their restoration. We aim to help your family's recovery after a fire, but we need your input to do this for you.

SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County works in Andover, Ham Lake, and Arden Hills, helping families recover memories and other important and valuable personal items after fire damage occurs. Call us at (763) 712-9712, 24/7, any day you need restoration specialists.

Dryer Fire Got You Down? Call SERVPRO for a Rapid Response in Coons Rapid

Avoiding a Dryer Fire and Damage in Your Coon Rapids Home

Having a washing machine and clothes dryer in your Coon Rapids home is one of the modern conveniences that most homeowners have today. However, it is crucial that you understand some factors about running your dryer that are essential for avoiding a fire in your home. There are homeowners who may not recognize that simple maintenance should be done to keep their families and dwellings safe.

If you were unfortunate enough to experience a dryer fire in your Coon Rapids residence, it is an unnerving and scary event, but you need help restoring your home once the fire is out. SERVPRO is a professional restoration company that has the training and experience that you need to get your home back to the way it was before the fire whenever possible. "Like it never even happened."

The various restoration services that SERVPRO technicians perform include mitigation to stop further damage from occurring and structural cleaning services to clean and deodorize your structure from damage and odor. We also clean up the contents of your home from smoke residues, sometimes doing this offsite while restoration is done in the home. In more severe cases of fire, structural components also may have to be replaced instead of restored. If the reconstruction and repairs require different skills, we work with other qualified professionals to get the job done.

The first factor that can cause a dryer fire is the lint accumulation which happens after each load of laundry is dried. The lint needs to be cleaned out of the trap each time you take your dry clothes out and do not ever run the dryer without the lint filter, as it protects the inner workings of the dryer from collecting lint. The venting system, especially if squeezed against the wall should be inspected to ensure the unobstructed flow of hot air.

You should also inspect your ducts regularly, as blocked ducts can cause a fire. Check the ducts once per month to make sure there are no blockages. Some signs that can alert you to this issue are your laundry taking longer to dry, your machine overheating, or the exhaust air failing to exit the vent. Never overload your dryer or leave it running while you are out of the home, either.

SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County wants to help you if your home in Arden Hills, St. Paul, or Ham Lake has experienced a fire. Contact us any time you need by dialing (763) 712-9712 so we can make your home safe again for you and your family.

Don't Let An Electrical Fire Destroy Your Ham Lake Home

11/6/2018 (Permalink)

Once an outlet sparks and ignites a flame, the fire damages can spread quickly throughout adjoining rooms through the wall cavities of your home.

Overloaded Electrical System In Your Ham Lake Home Can Cause Fire

As the holidays approach, many Ham Lake homeowners poise themselves to make the same mistakes that they do every year. With all the corded items relating to decorations, outlets easily become maxed out from the use of multiple extension cords all plugged into the same receiver. While your home has been safeguarded in part to prevent combustion from overworked outlets, these preventative measures do not always work.

Once an outlet sparks and ignites a flame, the fire damages can spread quickly throughout adjoining rooms through the wall cavities of your Ham Lake residence. As obscure as this situation might seem for causing a fire to break out in your residence, aging electrical systems and overloaded outlets and fuses are common culprits for house fires throughout the holidays. While the initial solution is to manage the distribution and limitations of your electrical system better, most homeowners do not come to the realization anything is wrong until disaster strikes.

Our SERVPRO professionals can respond quickly in the midst of a disaster and be available to you in this trying time beginning right after first responders have extinguished the flames. We can quickly assess the full scope of the damage, cataloging the loss that your home has sustained and detailing the nature of the work required to restore your property to original condition. Our initial inspection can document all of the necessary information required by your insurance provider to make filing a claim more efficient.

We can also speak directly with your insurance adjuster and communicate with you about the estimated cost of the restoration. You might find that filing a claim and raising your premiums could be unnecessary if the estimated costs do not exceed or gently exceed your deductible.

While no homeowner wants their holidays affected by an unexpected fire, our SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County rapid response team can work quickly to make it “Like it never even happened.” You can reach our dedicated and qualified professionals 24/7 by calling (763) 712-9712.

The Right Way to Clean Your Andover Property after a Fire Damage Incident

How prepared are you to deal with emergencies such as fire damage when they take place? As a property owner, you need to have a working game plan in place so that your operations are not brought to a standstill by such incidents. Now that this September is the NPM (National Preparedness Month), we hope you are going to learn something new as one of the ways of making sure your Andover home is safe.

Our SERVPRO technicians perform cleaning procedures in your Andover property with the aim of lowering the fire damage claim costs. Resurfacing and replacement are costly options for any insurance adjuster as it is mandatory to dispose of the damaged contents. As per the theme of the current NPM, “Don’t Wait Communicate.” It means every second counts, and by taking the right actions, you can lessen the damage and restore most of your items to their preloss state.

Before our SERVPRO team can select the most appropriate cleaning procedure to use, we start by doing a site inspection. First, we find the ignition point of the fire, and in the process, we trace how far the smoke particles have traveled in the building. There are chances of finding different smoke particles within the same location, which means we might be forced to use several cleaning methods to clean the area effectively.

While some surfaces can withstand aggressive cleaning methods during the restoration process, some can deteriorate further or experience additional damage. Our SERVPRO technicians are IICRC certified and competent to choose a cleaning procedure that preserves the surface or material that we are cleaning. Wet and dry cleaning processes are the standard techniques we use when cleaning the affected items or surfaces. At the end of the cleaning process, we have to dispose of the cleaning waste and debris as per the local and state regulations.

At SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County, we offer both commercial and residential cleaning and restoration services. Call us at (763) 712-9712 when you face storm, mold, fire, and water damage, and we can make it “Like it never even happened.”

Fire Damage Professionals In Andover Talk About Problems With Acoustic Ceilings

8/14/2018 (Permalink)

Structure fires are not as uncommon as you think and one day it could occur on your Andover property.

Fire Damage Professionals Talk About Problems With Acoustic Ceilings

Structure fires are not as uncommon as you think and one day it could occur on your Andover property. Even if the blaze was small and got put out quickly, it could have still created several problems inside your home. The heat and flames coming from the fire can torch and ruin building materials and contents. The smoke put off when things burn can make its way throughout your house and create separate issues. In some cases, heat and smoke can both negatively affect an object to the point where it must get removed and replaced. Some burn damage can get sanded off of certain materials, and they can be saved with refinishing. Most types of smoke damage can get cleaned using one or a variety of soot removal tactics and detergents. Before any work begins, our SERVPRO experts come up with an initial estimate for you and your insurance company that details which items are damaged and which ones we think we can save and not replace.

As a fire burns, the heat it creates rises causing burn damage to things located directly above the blaze's source first. In most cases of Andover fire damage restoration, the tops of walls and components attached to the ceiling are the regions where problems begin. Smoke also rises with heat and then when it touches cooler surfaces it leaves behind soot residues. Most of the time, smoke can affect the ceiling and upper parts of the wall before it ruins items located in other places.

During the initial testing and inspection phase, our SERVPRO emergency response group always inspects the ceilings for damage. Acoustic ceilings are not common in homes these days, but they still do exist. Acoustic ceiling tiles are prime targets for smoke residue contamination due to their high location and structural design. If these types of ceilings get burnt, it is usually relatively inexpensive to discard and replace the ceiling tiles.

In some situations, smoke damage can be cleaned off of ceiling tiles. Since the tiles are made out of porous materials, cleaning them with a dry sponge works best. Using wet chemicals on acoustic ceiling tiles can cause the soils to soak deeper into the tiles and cause permanent problems. If your day ever gets ruined by a structure fire, call SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County at (763) 712-9712 any hour of the day or night.

The best decision, whether encouraged by the insurance company or not, is our SERVPRO team.

With our experience and training, our technicians get prepared for any of the potential damages that they face. Soot damage is one of the most widespread of the issues following a fire, affecting both the areas where the fire happened and connected spaces such as other rooms and ductwork. High-powered vacuums often take point for a large portion of the cleanup. Stubborn and set in soot staining can often get removed with sponges, either used dry or in combination with a cleaning solution.

Taking care of the smoke damage is often contending with the smell left behind after the incident. Smoke and charring can leave a harsh odor throughout the affected areas, seeping into walls, carpeting, draperies, and other materials. Deodorization, often with thermal foggers, can break apart these harsh odor molecules and neutralize them on contact. This process is safe to use on clothing, furniture, carpeting, and wide open spaces affected by the smoke.

Finding yourself recovering from a fire in your home is no easy feat for any homeowner to face alone. Fortunately, you can rely on the expertise and experience of our SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County fire restoration specialists to help you clean up the mess and return your home to preloss conditions. Snowed-In Vent Can Cause Fire Damage In Ham Lake

1/22/2018 (Permalink)

Snow and Fire Damage in Ham Lake? Call SERVPRO for Cleanup and Restoration

Ham Lake Fire & Smoke Damage Occurs from Many Sources

Winter in Ham Lake means the probability of lots of snow. Snowbanks along the perimeter of your home increase the possibility of your ventilation systems working improperly because of a blocked exhaust or intake vent, sometimes causing a backup of volatile gases and debris that impair air quality or even spark a fire. When the wind howls and unexpected flames and smoke roll into your home, we are ready to help.

High winds exacerbate the snowfall totals in Ham Lake, creating significant drifts that can result in fire damage. This combination of bad weather and unfortunate luck can come as a surprise, but the drifting prevents your dryer from discharging the heat and lint. The hot air and flammable bits of linens and clothing combust as they clog the vent. Because the fire has limited oxygen, it smolders, sending dark, sticky smoke and soot throughout your dwelling. Cleanup of this kind of a fire, although it seems limited in scope, is most successfully done by our team of professionals.

The challenge here is the soot that is thicker and more tenacious than the ashes created by a hotter and faster burning fire. It infiltrates the laundry area and can move through your HVAC system if vents are nearby. Clothing, both clean and dirty, in the laundry room now needs a thorough cleaning with which SERVPRO's trained staff assists.

This type of soot also coats solid surfaces requires scrubbing with a spray and wipe method or abrasive cleaners or sponges. Porous items such as upholstery, window treatments, and carpeting need professional cleaning on site by SERVPRO technicians or off-site at a dry cleaner familiar with fire damage or in our facility. Items such as window blinds and intricately detailed light shades and knick-knacks benefit from immersion cleaning or treatment with an ultrasonic machine which uses sound waves to dislodge dirt. Our deodorization specialists also perform a series of tasks ranging from cleaning and disposing of burned items to employing technologically advanced thermal fogging or hydroxyl generators to eradicate the smell of the slow-burning fire.

The dryer vent and your HVAC system both require an inspection by our duct cleaning specialists. Some sections of the dryer vent might need replacement, but the heating and cooling system ductwork respond well to our professional cleaning. At a minimum, the filters in the HVAC system need replacing. SERVPRO workers also evaluate the snowpack around the offending and clogged dryer vent, arranging for snow and ice to be removed and recommending the area be maintained snow-free in the future.

If packed cold and wet snow is the cause of a dryer vent fire, SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County is just a call away. Dial (763) 712-9712 for a speedy inspection and expert service from our fire damage technicians.

Keep Your Ham Lake Home Fire Free for the Holidays

12/12/2017 (Permalink)

Make sure any lights strung on your tree or in your home are in good condition with no frayed wires.

SERVPRO’s Tips to Prevent Fire Damage During the Holiday Season

As we cozy-up in the colder months, planning abounds for the Ham Lake holidays. One thing not on most to-do lists is to recover after a fire. Unfortunately, winter time and the hustle and bustle of festivities contribute to an elevated fire risk. If your list expands to include home fire recovery, we are ready to help.

Holiday decor, including the light-strung natural Christmas tree, is a frequent cause of fire damage in Ham Lake. Add some fragrant candles, and a feast of foods simmering and roasting in the kitchen to increase the fire risk even higher. We are often called to respond to a fire over the holidays caused by a tipped candle, neglected stovetop, or dehydrated holiday tree. A few common sense tips can preserve this time for family and fellowship rather than visits from the fire department and our fire damage team.

Avoid a blazing pine tree by cutting off the end and making sure that you keep it well-watered during the season. Be certain that any lights you wrap around the tiers of branches are in good repair, with no frayed wires. Always unplug the tree when you leave your home or go to bed. Keep the tree away from other sources of light or heat like space heaters or candles, and watch that pets or children do not knock it over.

Keep glowing candles safe by supervising their use and taking care not to position them near draperies or other flammable materials. Candles need to be burned only when they are firmly ensconced in a fireproof holder and kept away from high traffic areas where they could be tipped over. Placing the matches or lighters used to ignite their flames in a place where curious kids cannot reach is also a way to prevent an accidental home fire.

Kitchen fires are the most common cause of home fire events year-round, and the holidays just add to the risk by increasing the chance that the cook gets distracted and a fire results. Time pressures, and the sheer volume of burners, ovens, broilers, and plugged-in appliances all contribute to the higher fire threat when cooking for a crowd.

In the event that your best efforts to avoid a home fire during the holidays fail, SERVPRO is the answer for fast and professional restoration services. Thorough cleaning, surface recovery and repair, and expert deodorization are the hallmarks of our response. You can rely on our fast response and commitment to undertake the many tasks necessary with a high level of skill and years of experience.

If an accidental blaze does occur, SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County awaits your call for help 365 days of the year. Contact us at (763) 712-9712 for a speedy delivery of quality fire damage remediation.

Fire Damage Cleanup After a Lightning Strike to Your Ham Lake Home

10/24/2017 (Permalink)

Lightning Strikes, Fire & Smoke Damage in Lake Ham, and SERVPRO for Restoration and Clean Up

The Nature of Combustion Directs the Fire Cleanup and Restoration

Lightning damage is not often thought about but is more common in Ham Lake than you might think. Lightning strikes to your home can damage certain things like electronics. However, they can also spark a fire and cause fire damage. The damage in a case like this can be devastating.

Your Ham Lake home cannot always be protected from fire damage, and when a lightning strike causes a fire, it can be a very frightening experience. At SERVPRO, we recognize that these events are daunting and you may not know where to turn next. Our staff are professionally trained to be able to handle fire damage of any kind, so you can feel at peace when you put your trust in us.

Fire damage restoration includes getting soot residues removed from different materials and surfaces in your home. Not all soot is the same, and some are not easy to clean, while other soot is very difficult to remove. Luckily, we understand smoke and combustion.

Combustion, an exothermic chemical reaction, happens when a material is burning. If the wood is burning, it is combusting. Combustion usually occurs when a solid turns into a gas because of heat. As combustion occurs, the material burning is breaking down and combining with oxygen while heat is given off.

Fire needs three components to work – fuel, heat, and oxygen. Fires form smoke when these elements are not in the balance, so incomplete combustion makes soot and smoke residues. These residues are corrosive and need to be removed as soon as possible after a fire occurs, or more damage continues to happen to your home and possessions. This also produces that different culprit to vanquish from your property--odor.

At SERVPRO, we know that we need to work quickly to clean your home because of this. Anything that can be restored, we clean and sanitize. If something cannot be salvaged, we take it out of your home so it can be replaced.

SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County is ready anytime you need us to clean up the fire damage in your home. If you reside in the areas of Oak Park, Hamm Lake, or Anoka, give us a call at (763) 712-9712 so we can restore your home as quickly as possible.

Leading Causes Of Fire Damage In Coon Rapids

4/12/2017 (Permalink)

Lightning has been the bane of homeowners since the dawn of civilization and remains a leading origin of fire damage.

Main Causes Of Fire Damage

Being ready for fire damage means being ready for its sources. The trouble is, fire can result from many different processes and factors, and controlling for all of these is all but impossible. The best you can do is to hunker down, make preparations wherever possible, and keep general fire safety measures like smoke detectors up-to-date and in good health. As a starting place, consider these common fire-starting events. These make up a great portion of calls received by SERVPRO nationwide, and avoiding them should drastically lower your risk of fire damage.

Lighting Strikes
Lightning has been the bane of homeowners since the dawn of civilization and remains a leading origin of fire damage in Coon Rapids. It is impossible to tell when and if lightning may strike your home, but there are things you can do to help keep damage to a minimum. The biggest safety measure you can invest in is a lightning rod - these serve to court lightning into a much safer channel leading straight into the ground. Alternatively, you might want to invest in a tall tree somewhere on your property, near the home yet close enough that fire could not spread from one to the other.

Kitchen Fires
Kitchen and grease fires are one of our most common calls, usually for minor damage. However, if no sprinkler or fire extinguisher is nearby, these fires can rapidly balloon into much larger problems. The best way to protect your home against kitchen fires is through well-placed sprinkler systems, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers.

Electrical Fires
Electrical fires are often the most dangerous fires in a home, as they carry the added risk of electrocution. SERVPRO technicians wear special clothing and gloves designed to protect them from damaged outlets, shorted circuits, and slashed cables after a fire, so you should also do your best to exercise extreme caution around any fire involving electronics or outlets.

SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County is ready 24/7 to pick up the phone and respond to your call for help. For assistance with fire, water, mold, or any other type of home damage, contact us at (763) 712-9712.

Why Fire Damage in Coon Rapids Properties Can Lead to a Battle with Stubborn Odors

1/16/2017 (Permalink)

Hydroxyl Generator Helps Remove Smoke Odors from a Home in Coon Rapids

SERVPRO Equipment and Skills Eliminate Odors After a Fire

For fire damage repair and restoration teams, there are many challenges. The homeowner is putting the future of their property in the hands of an outside service, so the stakes are high. No matter how severe the fire, it is our job to salvage as much as possible and try and bring your house back to a safe and habitable condition.

It is a complex process, and it does not end with damage caused by the flames. In fact, smoke and soot are just as destructive. They leave oily stains on walls and ceilings, as well as producing foul odors which stick to carpets soft furnishings. To repair fire damage in Coon Rapids homes, an approach which deals with both odor and the burnt items is needed.

However, the battle to eliminate stubborn odors is not always what it seems. Keep reading to find out why imaginary smells can cause a big problem for homeowners.

What Are Imaginary Odors?
It might sound strange to talk of ‘imaginary’ odors, particularly about fire damage. Clearly, fires do cause some very real and awfully pungent smells. At SERVPRO, we are trained in the most advanced deodorization techniques so that we can eliminate them quite quickly. The use of deodorizing chemicals is highly effective because they interact directly with the offending particles in the air.

We often find that even after a successful deodorization period, some homeowners still struggle with unpleasant odors. This can happen even if there is no evidence of smoke or soot residue left on the property. It occurs as a result of a phenomenon called heightened awareness. To put it simply, fire can have such a big impact on people that they find it hard to convince their senses that things are back to normal.

How Do Restoration Experts Remove These "imaginary" Odors?
The answer is simpler than you might think. All it takes is the right support. Most of the time, just taking a moment to guide homeowners through the fire damage restoration process is enough to put their mind at ease. This is why, at SERVPRO, we will not leave until you are completely satisfied. It is your home, and you decide when you are comfortable and pleased with the results of our work.

Our technicians are friendly, happy to chat, and can answer any questions that you might have about deodorization equipment, ozone machines, hydroxyl generators, containment protocols, and document and electronics restoration. By keeping you in the loop, we hope to make the process as stress-free as possible and get you feeling comfortable and safe in no time. "Like it never even happened."

To find out more about how deodorization works and why it is important for fire damage restoration, talk to the experts at SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County. We are based in your area, so our repairs are fast and efficient. Call us 24/7 at  (763) 712-9712.

Preventing and Restoring Winter Fire Damage To Your Hamm Lake Home

12/16/2016 (Permalink)

Fires can start quickly. Exercise safety precautions but if you do have a fire, call SERVPRO to assess and help with the damage!

Tips to Follow For Fire Safety

The colder months of the year compound the risk factors leading to a home fire making it more likely that your family may be hurt or displaced by a residential fire if precautions are not taken. SERVPRO recommends that you protect your Hamm Lake home from the terrors of a winter fire by following these tips.

Have your wood burning fireplaces inspected and cleaned by a reputable company on a regular basis to prevent chimney fires.

Keep flammable items away from fireplaces, space heaters or candles.

Extinguish fires and candles at bedtime and when no one is in the area to supervise them. Never leave children or pets alone in a room with a lit fire or burning candles.

Limit the use of space heaters only to times when responsible adults are awake and supervising. Inspect for frayed wiring regularly and make sure your heaters are UL listed and of the proper size for the area to be warmed.

Take care when decorating for the holidays, avoiding the use of multiple extension cords and outdated strings of lights. Turn off holiday lights and other decor when retiring for the night or when leaving the house.

Ensure your kitchen areas are equipped with fire extinguishers as you bake, cook and otherwise prepare for the winter holidays. Use extreme caution when deep frying festive treats or when many hands are helping in the room.

If a fire does break out in your home despite precautions, it is always a concerning experience, but when fire damages your Hamm Lake house during the winter you have the added challenge of freezing temperatures as you recover from the disaster. We are able to assist you with all aspects of winter fire damage including boarding up or otherwise securing areas of your home left open to the elements after a cold weather fire. Our mission is to restore and remediate the damage done by a winter fire rather than tearing up and replacing structures and contents during the snowy months. Our trained technicians are able to accomplish this even while your family is living in undamaged areas of your home by using smoke and soot containment systems and judicious applications of professional air scrubbers and deodorants that work toward eliminating the unpleasant odor remaining after a fire.

When you endure a minor fire in your home, you may be tempted to try to clean up the soot and remove the smoky smell on your own. Because of the complex chemical reactions that occur during a fire, it is wisest to invite SERVPRO to partner up with you to assess the post-fire situation in your home. We can suggest tasks a homeowner can handle easily while our professional team works on the challenges of fire restoration that require specially trained and certified technicians to complete.

Once the fire department departs call SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County. Experienced dispatchers at (763) 712-9712 will get a crew on its way to your Ham Lake home to begin the fire damage restoration process.

Sentimental Possessions May Be Salvageable After a House Fire

SERVPRO Cleans Up a Toy or a House After Fire Damage in Anoka

After Fire Damage, SERVPRO Strives to Restore Personal Keepsakes and Sentimental Items

Sometimes items that may be deemed “unsalvageable” because of a small monetary value have the highest sentimental value for our customers. After a fire, an insurance company will make a determination whether it is more economical and feasible to clean and restore an item or pay to replace it. If it is more cost-effective to replace, the item is deemed “unsalvageable”. Unfortunately, this doesn’t take into account any sentimental worth the item may have.

This toy earthmover was taken out of a house fire in Anoka by our crews. Because it was covered in soot and smoke, the toy was put into the unsalvageable category. But this yellow grader was the favorite possession of the homeowner’s 4-year old son, who lost most of his belongings and toys in the fire. Our cleaning team took it upon themselves to clean this yellow toy grader and restore it to its original condition "Like it never even happened." We carefully wiped down, using brushes and cleaning tools, the metal body, plastic tires, and turning mechanisms with various cleansers and solvents. When we delivered it to the rental home where the family was staying the look of joy on the boy’s face was worth all the effort! He was ready to use his yellow toy grader to rebuild his house.

SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County takes pride in giving back to our local communities. Rely on us to restore your water or fire damaged property, including your keepsakes and heirlooms, to its pre-loss condition whenever possible. Call us 24/7 at (763) 712-9712.

It is hard to imagine anything more severe than a fire in your home that threatens your family’s sense of security and leaves behind plenty of fire damage in Blaine. A fire can quickly bring a business' operations to a halt suddenly, affecting not only the business but its customers as well. A wildfire that is out of control can wreak major havoc on communities.

Why You Need Fire Damage Insurance in Coon Rapids

Snow Will Not Keep a Fire Away

Fire Damage Insurance for Your Coon Rapids Home

If your homeowner’s policy, in your Coon Rapids home, doesn’t include fire damage protection, you’re missing critical coverage that could save you a bundle.

Every year accidental house fires cause billions of dollars of damage to homes across the United States. A homeowner not covered by fire restoration insurance can find himself in real financial difficulty following fire damage to his abode.

Fire restoration insurance is part of your homeowner’s insurance policy, obtained through your provider of choice. This coverage enables you to address some concerns, such as repairs needed after an accidental house fire.

Depending on the coverage and the extent of the fire, restoration insurance may cover part or all of any fire damage and repair costs. The amount of coverage you need depends on several factors, including (but not limited to) your insurance company and any applicable state laws. Your provider can go over these details with you when you purchase the policy.

Coverage Options

Coverage for fire restoration costs varies widely, based on insurance provider and the state in which you reside. Your policy may include funds for replacing fire-damaged items, rebuilding costs, and hiring a fire restoration company such as SERVPRO. The scope of the policy, the extent of property damage, and applicable state laws will govern whether the policy fully reimburses you for all costs. The cause of the fire, as determined by fire department inspectors, can also play a major role in determining the amount you receive.

Your insurance company may refer you to a specific restoration company, which will then work in conjunction with your provider to reach an agreeable settlement for any necessary repairs. If you’re unable to get a referral, the process still works in much the same way. The insurance company will determine the amount it’s prepared to reimburse you, and the restoration company will quote you a repair cost. The two companies will then work together until they agree on terms.

But be careful! Restoration work on your home should begin within 24 hours of the fire, to prevent secondary water damage and to avoid the threats of mold and mildew.

Hiring SERVPRO is an excellent, cost-effective way to restore your home and cope with the devastating effects of a house fire resulting in serious fire damage. Consulting these professionals ensures your home will be restored to its former state as quickly and efficiently as possible.

For more information on fire restoration insurance, please contact your homeowner’s insurance provider. It is wise to be prepared in the event of an unfortunate fire in your Coon Rapids home.

Fire Damage in Coon Rapids and Anoka

A home like this one is filled with lots of content that all needs to be accounted for after a fire

Fire damage to your home can be a devastating event to deal with, even after you know that everyone is safe and sound.

While most people are rightfully initially concerned about their home, once the fire department leaves, attention soon turns to all of the contents and possessions still inside.

Content management can be a big part of a fire loss.  At SERVPRO of Coon Rapids and Central Anoka County, anytime we take contents out of a customer’s home, we use a bar coded inventory tracking software program.  A picture is taken of each item and then a description is put into the program.  Lastly, the item is matched with a box that is then bar coded.  This helps ensure that everything is accounted for and, if the homeowners ever want to find something, we can simply do a search for that item on the software and instantly know which box the item is in.

Remebmer, we are always here to help, 24/7: 763.712.9712

  • Be sure to ask for an estimate of cost for the work and agree to it in writing. You will find the names and phone numbers for companies that do this work in the phone book and on the Internet, or ask your insurance agent for a company they have used.

Recovering from Smoke Damage To Your Home in Coon Rapids

9/16/2014 (Permalink)

A certified restoration company can help you through the process of putting everything back together when your home is damaged by smoke and fire.

When the place where you live is damage by smoke from a fire is natural to feel a sense of unease and loss.  Most people want to get everything back to normal as soon as possible but they aren't quite sure where to start.

Here are a few things to think about that will help speed up the recovery:

1. First and foremost, take care of yourself and your family.  This means getting everyone out safe and not going back into your home until you are told it is okay to do so.  Then when you do, use extreme cautiion as you will most likely be walking on uneven, wet, damaged surfaces.  Call relatives if you need a place to stay.  If you don't know anyone who can offer shelter, contact your local Red Cross for help.

2. Be sure to let your insurance company know what happened.  Besides handling the claim, your insurance carrier can be a great resource to you in handeling all the things that come up when your home is damaged in a fire.  Making sure they are aware of what is going on as soon as possible will help them help you.

3. If you can, try to prevent further damage.  If the fire department came and water hoses were used, try to prop up furniture off of wet surfaces.  Also, opening a few windows can help dissipate the smoke smell more quickly.

If there is a lot of damage to your home,  enlist the help of a restoration specialist.  Your insurance agent can recommend one to you.  SERVPRO of NW Ramsey County specializes in smoke and water remediation and our certified technicians are always on call to help with needed.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

5/27/2014 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half. The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be installed in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detecor requirements are met.

Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or clients to escape quickly and safely in an emergency situation.

Smoke Alarm Safety Tips

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of the home, including the basement.
  • Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.
  • Test smoke alarms at least once a month using the test button.
  • Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm "chirps", the battery is low and should be replaces right away.
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
