Advanced Technology

3/30/2022 (Permalink)

The restoration industry has seen significant technological advancements over the years. Our technicians here at SERVPRO have taken full advantage of these advancements through the utilization of the various advanced technologies. In today's blog, we will cover three of our team's favorite advanced technologies that are used to facilitate moisture detection, drying, and sanitation. Read more to learn about infrared cameras, air movers and dehumidifiers, and OSHA-approved cleaning agents!

How do we detect moisture?

Infrared Cameras!

In the event of a water emergency, the first step is to detect water damage, measure the extent of the water damage, and monitor the moisture levels in the affected area(s). Water damage investigation has come a long way! We used advanced technologies, such as infrared cameras, to help expedite the process of detecting water damage. By speeding this up, we can save you from secondary water damage by identifying the location of moisture that is often unseen by the naked eye. Infrared cameras are used to scan locations of moisture inside of flooring, ceilings, and walls that must be extracted to prevent secondary water damage and microbial growth. We don't stop at infrared cameras though! We use hygrometers and sensitive motor detectors that help us measure the saturation level of the moisture.

What do we use for drying?

Air Movers and Dehumidifiers!

After water damage has been identified, it is essential to extract the water immediately! Once any standing water has been extracted, affected area(s) must be thoroughly dried in order to prevent secondary damage and mold. Our technicians facilitate this process by using air movers and dehumidifiers during a water damage emergency. Air movers work to quickly evaporate moisture and dehumidifiers extract water vapor lingering in the air. When used in tandem, our industrial strength air movers and powerful dehumidifiers can protect your property's flooring, walls, and furniture from warping and swelling.

How do we sanitize?

OSHA-Approved Cleaning Agents!

Once the affected areas have been extracted of water and dried completely, the water damaged areas should be cleaned and sanitized. This sanitization process completely eliminates odors and contaminants that could lead to issues in the future. Here at SERVPRO we utilize two different types of cleaning agents: disinfectants and deodorizers. Our disinfection cleaning agents work to prevent the growth of dangerous microbials including mildew, fungi, and other types of bacteria. With the help of our deodorization agents, odors that result from excess moisture are eradicated!

What a day it was! With a heat advisory for 4 straight days and not a single cloud in the sky, Aimee, Scott, and Tierney took on a long day in the heat.

Our infamous "What the Duck?!" game was a hit. The goal of the game was to avoid the only duck without a number, which we called the Ugly Duckling. If you successfully grabbed a 1, 2, or 3, you were entered into a raffle for lunch for your office, a $100 Visa gift card, or both!

Community involvement is one of our passions and it has been way too long since we were able to go out and about with familiar faces. Despite the last year, everyone was in high spirits to converse and get back into the swing of things.

Being involved with an association like IREM reminds us of the importance of making a difference in the careers of those who manage and are being managed. Through professional development events and collaboration with various business, IREM sets the stage for opening doors, forging connections, and showing the way forward.

By the Book: Following Mold Standards

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

mold damage in Coon Rapids home We have a team of trained technicians who are certified by the IICRC in Applied Microbial Remediation.

Running a business in Coon Rapids and within Central Anoka County means that you often will have busy days on the go and a wide variety of tasks to complete. As a property owner it may be easy to focus on the work, but it is also essential to ensure that the property itself isn't neglected. If a musty odor or visible fungal growth appears, it will take more than a simple household product to clean it. There are industry-wise mold remediation standards established by the EPA, OSHA, and the IICRC that need to be addressed and followed to ensure the problem is properly taken care of.

Following Mold Standards Guarantees Proper Cleanup

Eliminating Mold

In a similar fashion to water, fire, and storm damage, a mold remediation plan will be different in every unique case. If the area effected by mold is under ten square feet, minimal repairs are needed. However, if mold is not taken care of in a timely manner, it can spread quickly and in vast amounts. Determining the mold standards that will need to be implemented include:

  • Location of the mold
  • Size of the growth
  • Duration the building materials have been wet
  • Presence of visible moisture damage

What to Expect After a Fire

1/21/2021 (Permalink)

SERVPRO fans preparing for a commercial property fire When we say 24 Hour Service, we mean it! Our teams are always ready to respond and, most times, will show up at your property within an hour of a call

When a fire occurs on your commercial property, both firefighters and sprinkler systems will do everything that they can to put the fire out. Although this is better than the entire property burning down, it does create additional considerations for you during the restoration process of your property. To maintain the value and integrity of your property, water cleanup is just as vital as removing smoke and fire damage within the hours and days of a fire.

Common Types of Damage Post-Fire

Direct Fire Damage

When fires reach high temperatures it becomes an incredibly destructive force. Fire cleanup often requires restorers to simply remove surfaces and items that have been damaged by fire. With our restore vs. replace mentality, we are able to return items to our warehouse for fire remediation and smoke damage repair. Although we do have fire cleanup capabilities, certain electronics, roofing, and structural elements of a building may have to be replaced entirely.

Smoke Residue

Smoke can create residues that are both unpleasant to smell and are damaging to your belongings. It is essential to start smoke damage cleanup as soon as possible to increase the chance for salvaging your items. Smoke residue can build up in computers and other various electronics which can cause them to malfunction. By contacting SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County you can be assured that our technicians are proper restoration professionals.

Water Damage

Water damage is always a serious concern and must be handled quickly and efficiently to avoid secondary damages. Certain items and surfaces are more vulnerable to water damage than others depending on their materials. It is very important to dry furniture and other relatively porous possessions as quickly as possible so that mold spores cannot colonize on them. Let our certified technicians handle any residual water remaining, we will ensure that the water that has infiltrated surfaces is taken care of properly.

Why SERVPRO of Coon Rapids/Central Anoka County?

When disaster strikes, it might feel like your property will never be restored back to the way that it was preloss. With the right help, many of your possessions can likely be saved and protected from secondary damage by mold and decay. If you are in need of water, fire, and storm damage, as well as any cleaning for your commercial property within Central Anoka County, do not hesitate to call the experts today at 763-712-9712.

Our Specialists Discuss The Behavior Of Smoke In Coon Rapids

1/26/2020 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Experts In Coon Rapids Explain The Behavior Of Smoke

Whenever an inferno sparks inside your Coon Rapids house, some of your building materials and contents fully combust or turn from a solid to a gas with the application of heat. However, during most fire damage scenarios, several substances do not completely combust and spread throughout your building in the form of smoke. Smoke can quickly spread into areas far away from the blaze's source. These partially combusted particles can cause other negative issues.

When battling fire damage in Coon Rapids, our SERVPRO technicians examine how smoke behaved during the blaze to help with eliminating any problems caused. Smoke can cause several problems inside any structure that it affects. When it contacts cooler surfaces like the upper portions of your walls or ceilings, it can cause soils and soot residues to negatively affect the surfaces of your building materials and contents.

One thing that sets SERVPRO above other restoration companies is that our technicians have a vast knowledge of the behavior of smoke. Our crew is trained by the International Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification or IICRC program. We study and understand the following four principles of how smoke behaves.

1. Temperature Of Smoke
When smoke first comes off of the flames, it is hotter than the air around it. Warmer air rises because it is not as dense as the air in the atmosphere. This means that soot residues can be most present on the ceilings and upper walls of the areas of your house that are near the source of the fire.

2. Temperature Of Surrounding Surfaces
Hot smoke tends to be attracted to cooler surfaces, which is a principle that is referred to as "hot goes to cold." This means that soot residues can be more heavily concentrated on cooler surfaces of your contents and building materials.

3. Arrangement Of Building Space
Contents and building materials that are located close to the fire's source will collect more soot residues as smoke moves through your building, and areas far from the source will have fewer amounts of soils and soot.

4. Ionization And Magnetism
In some cases, soots can become magnetically charged and be attracted to the surfaces of your building materials or contents that have the opposite magnetic charge.

If you ever need professional restoration conducted after an inferno ignites on your property, call SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County at (763) 712-9712 24/7. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.

Proper Deodorization of a Fire Damage Site in Coon Rapids

The smell of fire damage is unmistakable. Even after cleaning the property, removing all burnt materials, and refinishing the charred surfaces, some smoky smell or another type of odor might persist depending on what the fire burns.

Sources of Odor

The reasons why properties may require thorough deodorization after fire damage incidents in Coon Rapids vary. In some cases, the odorous residues penetrate deep into construction materials and contents, therefore, continuing to emit odor even after restoration is deemed complete. Alternatively, some residues or aerosols might remain suspended in the air, causing the unpleasant odor. The FSRT, Fire, and Smoke Restoration Technicians in our team have the skills to identify the problem and determine the right response plan for your property.

Air Filtration

In the case of aerosols and fine residues in the air, there is a need to circulate the air inside the building to remove them. Our SERVPRO technicians use AFD, air filtration devices with different types of filters to capture residues from the air. A typical system has three filters, including a primary filter to capture large debris, a pleated filter, and a HEPA filter to capture fine particles, removing 99.97% of particulate matter from the air. Sometimes, we also use axial fans to blow out the particulate-filled air from the house, allowing recirculation with fresh air from outside the building.

Cleaning the Air Conditioner

Sometimes the problem stems from the HVAC system where fire damage can deposit residues, especially if the system was on during the fire. When the system is operated after restoration, it reintroduces the residues into the indoor air leading to the unpleasant odor. Our SERVPRO technicians use specialized duct cleaning equipment to remove residues from the HVAC system. We also change removable filters from the system.

Local Andover Fire Damage Remediation Services Available 24/7

You might think of the possibility of fire damage happening in your home and think it most likely could never happen. You are too careful to leave a candle unattended or cook in an unsafe way. However, fire damage can happen to anyone in a variety of ways.

Imagine a scenario where your Andover home suffers fire damage because of a freak electrical fire. You may think it's unlikely, but the cause is more common than it seems like it would be. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 10% of home fires between 2012-2016 were caused by "electrical distribution and lighting." Living in an older home makes the percentage rise higher, as it is more likely that the electrical work hasn't been checked out by an electrician in a significant time.

Many scenarios could cause a fire to break out in your home, but what is important is how quickly you react to them. Reacting quickly, and calling for help as soon as possible, could mean the difference between being able to save some of your impacted possessions and not being able to. For this reason, you should contact SERVPRO as soon as you can when your home suffers from fire damage.

Here at SERVPRO, we believe in basing our schedule around yours. No matter when your home needs our help, we can be there, whether it is 3 PM or 3 AM. We also believe in getting to your home as soon as possible after your call, because we understand how time-sensitive damage from a fire can be. Furthermore, our employees are highly trained and certified by the Institution of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration (IICRC.)

So, what can we do to help your home after fire damage? Let's say an electrical fire happened inside of your bathroom and severely damaged the vanity, countertop, and the wall behind it. Our SERVPRO techs can remove the vanity and countertop. Let's say the vanity is not salvageable, but the countertop is. We can send it to our facility to be cleaned with house-made solutions designed to lift the grime and soot that fire leaves behind. Our techs can then demolish the damaged wall, removing drywall and insulation. Once finished, we can contact a trustworthy contractor for you who can rebuild the bathroom wall, before installing a new vanity and reinstalling your countertop.

If your home is in urgent need of fire damage remediation, never hesitate to get the help you deserve. Contact SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County by phoning (763) 712-9712. Day or night, we're here for you.

Some Steps for Efficient Flood Damage Remediation in Anoka

12/15/2019 (Permalink)

flooded living room Don't despair when facing flood damage in your home! Call SERVPRO for effective remediation services.

Why Homeowners with Flood Damage in Anoka Trust SERVPRO to Mitigate Their Residences

Any disaster that displaces your family and destroys the contents of your Anoka home, along with much of its interior, can overwhelm anyone. What you do before such an event can protect your personal belongings and help keep your family safe for the duration of the crisis. As soon as possible, calling SERVPRO for vital assistance with mitigation can eliminate further loss.

One reason why SERVPRO is the company residents trust in Anoka for flood damage mitigation comes from the way we handle the entire situation. Our training encompasses the machinery and equipment, the concerns of the customer and their family, the property impacted by the flood, and how to work together to make things “Like it never even happened.” When your home floods, you need  a competent team who can advise you of your options and guide you through the crisis while keeping your budget and other concerns in mind.

Although we use a topical disinfectant before we begin working on mitigation, removing drywall previously submerged under floodwater must happen as soon as possible. Disinfecting does not prevent migration of water.

Removing lower portions of walls lets us spray down the studs to prevent microbial activity and helps us manage how rapidly the interior dries. They can become full of condensation that clings to the interior surfaces. Sealing these spaces by installing new drywall too early causes weakened materials nearby, odors, and high humidity, among other problems we can help you avoid.

Other damaged items needing replaced after a flood include carpeting, parquet flooring, older linoleum, and furniture and bedding. Getting these items out of your flood-damaged home takes up space. After photographing and inventorying each item, disposing each into a large-size waste receptacle located at the curb helps save cleanup costs while protecting the neighborhood's environment.

Our water damage specialists' training includes studying to earn recognition from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). In-house training, plus working with more experienced technicians gives our customers services tailored to their property's specific and immediate needs.

For experienced, fully-equipped flood damage restoration experts in Andover, Columbia Heights, or Arden Hills, call SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County's service line, (763) 712-9712.

We have the most advanced equipment and products to make our restoration processes more efficient, which can save our customers time and money.

Water Loss, Skilled Technicians, Advanced Equipment
Our water recovery team is one of the most experienced of our entire SERVPRO crew, boasting decades of experience in the industry. With so many potential sources for water damage in Coon Rapids homes, experience makes a substantial difference in knowing how to proceed when minutes count. We have ensured that our professionals continually pursue the latest training and education in the water recovery niche of the industry, not only obtaining their accreditations as Water Restoration Technicians (WRT) through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC.)

We know that success in water restoration comes from developing our entire infrastructure of competent employees from our owners to our field technicians. With how frequent these disasters can be for the entire Greater Minneapolis region, having a full roster of competent professionals with the right experience can protect area homes and businesses with real-time mitigation and restoration strategies. We have invested in the latest equipment, including hundreds of high-velocity air movers, low grain refrigerant (LGR) dehumidifiers, and desiccant dehumidifiers.

Extraction and drying are vital components to the recovery work that we do, and we have specialized equipment that can help us to reduce saturation in areas like carpeting, hardwood flooring, and ceiling spaces. Water damage in Coon Rapids homes can spread quickly, so our team relies on discovery tools like infrared imagery to help identify moisture pockets as we rapidly work to reduce relative humidity beneath an established baseline.

Fire Damage means more than just burnt items
We strive to offer the most effective and efficient services when addressing fire damage in Coon Rapids homes and businesses. This commitment begins with the education of our field technicians and management staff, and we encourage our professionals to not only obtain accreditations in Fire & Smoke Restoration (FSRT) through the IICRC but also to pursue secondary education as well with endorsements in:
-    Odor Control (OCT)
-    Carpet Cleaning (CCT)
-    Upholstery & Fabric Cleaning (UFT)
To ensure that our professionals have the best approaches to fire recovery in Coon Rapids homes and commercial properties, we team up with local fire departments to identify the steps that these departments take when extinguishing flames where sprinkler systems were available and when they were not. These same events helped educate the public about how structure fires can spread and useful tips to limit their destructive power in area homes.

We know that no two fire disasters are the same, so our well-trained restoration specialists must quickly assess fire damage in Coon Rapids properties and begin designing a recovery plan that suits soot removal, odor removal, air filtering, containment, and even content management as needed.

Mold Remediation Requires Training and Professionalism
We live in an area that can see a substantial change in temperature from one season to another, and the humidity index throughout all of these respective seasons also fluctuates greatly. When you consider how many homes have poorly ventilated areas like basements and cellars, or even attic space without proper airflow and sunlight, the possibility of mold damage in Coon Rapids homes is a constant threat. Addressing these concerns must be swift and deliberate, as mold colonization can spread out quickly from the initial growth, and can get out of control in a short period.

We strive to provide our customers with the most knowledgeable professionals available in the area for mold remediation, and that begins with pursuing the coursework to certify our professionals as Applied Microbial Remediation Technicians (AMRT) through the IICRC. Also, these same qualified professionals with the latest practices and techniques seek accreditations through the same firm in Water Restoration and Applied Structural Drying. These additional endorsements provide the experience and education to dry up moisture and dampness and prevent mold recurrence in Coon Rapids residences.

Our success combating mold damage in Coon Rapids homes is also a testament to the investments our SERVPRO team has made in our inventory of recovery and remediation tools. For issues that immediately arise, like the need for containment, we have specialized equipment like our negative pressure air scrubbers that can vent outside and prevent the colonization from spreading beyond physical established barriers.

Storm Damage from Rains, Winds, and Snow
Our storm damage recovery in Coon Rapids is so successful and experienced that we have gotten recognized and sought out on a national level to help with disaster recovery in other areas of the country. Part of our excessive experience and successes in this niche of the restoration industry hinges on our geographic location and the severe weather events that we have experienced and continue to address throughout every year.

We strive to provide every customer, residential, or commercial, with the same strategy when storm systems have damaged their Coon Rapids property. Once our team first arrives, we work to secure the premises as much as possible before we begin to assess the damage and create a tailored plan designed to return the damaged structure to preloss condition as promptly as possible.

Considering that many weather events can lead to worsening conditions like flood effects, storm damage in Coon Rapids homes and businesses gets approached with compassion and sensitivity for our customers. We understand it is a trying experience, and we want to help you through it.

We know that there are options in restoration services in the area, but our SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County professionals have the skills and the equipment to make any loss incident “Like it never even happened.” Give us a call anytime disaster strikes for help that your property needs at (763) 712-9712.

The Basic Deodorization Procedures Used to Repair Fire Damage in Ham Lake Properties

3/11/2019 (Permalink)

Our technicians can help you with fire and smoke damage. Call right after the firefighters leave for best results with remediation and odor removal.

Fire Damage and Smoke Odors go Hand in Hand After a Fire Incident in Your Home

Fire is a very destructive element that can significantly set back the homeowner financially. Indeed, many have been left broke and even homeless after a devastating fire breaks out. Fire emergencies can occur from a gas leakage, careless smoking, short circuiting, kitchen fire, and candle or heater, among other factors. When this happens, it can leave undesirable odors lingering.

If you are a victim of a fire disaster, SERVPRO can respond quickly to neutralize the situation. Our highly skilled technicians have industry leading deodorization solutions to counteract fire damage odors in your Ham Lake property. The basic deodorization procedures are as follows:

1. Eliminating the odor source and debris
On arrival at the site of the fire damage, our technicians locate the odor source and remove it completely. This option is often more preferable than trying to deodorize the source – for instance in the case of a dead animal. We also extract charred structural materials before initiating the deodorization process. This is because the debris can continue producing smoke odors even long after deodorization.

2. Cleaning the surfaces with odor-causing residues
Thorough cleaning is also necessary to get rid of small particles that may continue generating odors after deodorization. Some of the surfaces that need particular attention include ceilings, cabinets, vent filters, vent hood, walls, countertops, and the stove. Our fire damage responders inspect all rooms to determine the extent of the odors before proceeding. In some cases, we may need to clean the entire building and its contents to remove the smoke odors.

3. Recreating the conditions that allowed odor penetration,
SERVPRO technicians do not leave anything to chance. To trace the odors to their source, we may need to recreate the conditions that facilitated their penetration. In the case of smoke odor, for instance, we spray a deodorizing “smoke” that follows the original path of the odors. If urine is the source of the problem, we use deodorizers (digesters, neutralizers, and sanitizers). Sometimes the odors can be distributed in several ways, for example through air currents. In this case, we apply multiple methods of deodorization.

4. Sealing surfaces exposed to malodors
If the situation is severe, SERVPRO technicians may have to seal the surfaces exposed to malodors. Our fire damage restoration experts can determine whether the problem is too impractical for deodorization. If so, we use two effective sealing techniques: sealing unreachable duct surfaces in the air-handling system and painting the walls.

These are some of the many steps we take to ensure that your property is free of toxic odors. As a locally owned and operated company, SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County can respond quickly to your fire emergency. Call us today at (763) 712-9712.

Challenges of Andover Mold Damage in the Winter

3/11/2019 (Permalink)

If you are dealing with mold damage in your home, don't stress because SERVPRO can remediate the mess!

Mold Damage in Andover Can Still Occur in the Winter Months

While mold is most likely to grow in the summer months, it can still cause problems in the winter, especially if a summertime infestation has been allowed to persist into colder conditions. As the weather gets colder, our approach to mold damage changes to accommodate shifting conditions and new impediments. An Andover mold damage case in January might be even tougher for SERVPRO to root out than a fast-growing colony in warmer conditions. Here are a few of the challenges we may face when dealing with mold in the winter.

Frozen Colonies

Mold damage in Andover homes typically occurs around a source of liquid water. Whether this is a puddle, drip, or soak, this source of water is liable to freeze once temperatures get cold enough, potentially frosting any mold feeding off of it. While this is usually very effective in stopping growth, it also makes the colony harder to remove and does not permanently kill off most species of spores. Our line of mold treatments makes sure that once conditions thaw, mold does not return with a reinvigorated fury in your home.

Challenging Conditions

Because of mold's proclivity for water, it often only becomes a problem when precipitation is the heaviest. Unfortunately, in the winter months, this can be in very snowy or blizzard conditions, making it difficult for us to respond to and treat mold damage in your home. However, as soon as conditions allow, SERVPRO is ready and waiting to help local residents with any difficulties that may arise out of the inclement weather.

Hardy Species

Some species of mold are much more common in winter months than others, and these are often the hardiest of the bunch. Mold that can withstand freezing temperatures is typically highly resistant to other forms of treatment, as well, making it a challenge for less-well-equipped companies. SERVPRO stocks a full retinue of mold treatment equipment to ensure that any variety of mold can be treated quickly and effectively in any season.

Our Technicians Are Trained To Handle Any Mold Damage Disaster That May Occur In Your Andover Home

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County has highly trained members on every team we send to your home.

Why SERVPRO Training Makes Our Mold Damage Remediation In Andover So Effective

At SERVPRO, mitigating damaged areas in Andover properties and remediating microbial infestations helps keep our community healthy and strong. Having a home that keeps out pests and the elements ensures families enjoy both privacy and security, as well.

Helping owners protect their homes adequately is why SERVPRO technicians study and train to earn IICRC certificates in mold damage remediation in Andover. Above-normal populations of mold can cause health effects in people, in addition to the property damage these microbes so effortlessly create. SERVPRO technicians can help prevent the harm these microorganisms can cause to your home's interior.

To do this most efficiently, we use negative pressure enclosures that assist us in protecting otherwise uncontaminated areas in your house from invasion by spores that mold releases when we begin the remediation process. Scraping mold from surfaces, as well as wiping other areas down, or cutting damaged materials away from non-affected areas can cause spores to enter the air. Mold does this to spread to additional areas.

Our air scrubbers all come equipped with HEPA filters that trap both dust and spores, as well as any microbes themselves that pass through. Inside negative pressure containment structures that we build around the area containing mold, we force these particles through the air scrubber and outside of your home, ensuring anything that does manage to pass through only does so to the outside and never to your home's interior.

We use additional air scrubbers to clean the air of any spores that may already exist in the indoor environment, before our arrival. Our personal protective gear (PPE) also means it is less likely that mold or spores remain attached to us. Eliminating as many possible routes spores can use to travel to other areas of your home keeps reinfestation to a minimum.

Our Mold Removal Specialist (MRS) can also use blasting techniques that eliminate mold from surfaces. These use either baking soda or dry ice in the form of pellets to scrub mold from surfaces. However, dry ice, with its super-low temperatures, means microbes and their spores freeze on contact and die. This protects your home even more while creating less of a mess, as the carbon dioxide (dry ice) quickly dissipates into the air as it reaches room temperature.

SERVPRO of Coon Rapids / Central Anoka County has highly trained members on every team we send to your home. Professionally skilled remediation of mold damage restores your Ham Lake, St Paul, or Arden Hills home, so it's “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (763) 712-9712, 24/7, year-round for highly skilled professionals who care about your family and your home.
